There is such a town, one of many.
Among the mountains, busy people care for their loved ones. Weeks are busy, there's always something to do, but Sundays bring peace. Everyone goes to church – the heart of the city – to catch their breath, even if only for a moment. It's simply a pleasant town, one of many.
Silence hangs over this town.
There was a time when, among these same mountains, busy people cared for their loved ones and worked hard. Fridays brought peace. Women lit candles, men walked toward the heart of the town – the church, but they passed it by, only to stand just around the corner in the doorway of the synagogue and catch their breath. This town had two hearts. One of them suddenly burst and never beat again.
In Limanowa, Jews and Christians for centuries created a history seemingly invisible today. Half the town has disappeared. Only hidden, tiny traces lead us to a colorful, vibrant tangle of cultures, languages, and traditions.
Sometimes in silence, words fail. Then the music comes.
Agata Cieplińska

“DISTURB THE SILENCE” is a musical story about the multicultural, pre-war history of Limanowa.
For almost 400 years, Christians and Jews co-created the Galician town, a fact rarely remembered today. The Jewish community in Limanowa never recovered, leaving only a few mementos. One of these is sheet music found in an old piano, likely from the collection of the Limanowa Jewish musician Salomon Süsskind. The melodies discovered among them will serve as a reminder of the town's colorful past, which before the war boasted several theaters, orchestras, a cinema, and a thriving cultural life surrounded by music.
"Disturb the Silence" features original arrangements of melodies recorded in Süsskind's manuscripts, the music books of unknown Jewish students from Limanowa, and melodies played by the Goldberger family of musicians from Nowy Sącz. Many of these, such as "Rebecca" and the theme from the film "The Dybbuk," are well-known to us today, but by recalling them, we break the silence about their former performers.
The project involves outstanding Polish artists of the younger generation: Andrzej Ciepliński (clarinet), Piotr Przedbora (guitar), Paweł Janas (accordion) and Piotr Zimnik (double bass), who are normally associated with Warsaw and Berlin.

Support the "Disturb the Silence" project. We want the concert in Limanowa to be the beginning of a story about Jewish culture in Limanowa. Our goal is to release and promote internationally an album featuring the music of Jews from Limanowa and Nowy Sącz, as well as to create a short video reportage that, through the stories of the found sheet music, tells the story of its owners and a world that has irretrievably disappeared.
